WHO WANTS TO BE THE BROADY MAYOR?

PART OF THE FURNITURE

PRACTICE LED RESEARCH AND SITE SPECIFIC ARTWORKS

Part of the Furniture (PotF) is an exploration of how textile installations created from the patterns of commuter waiting places can be used to reactivate and reengage the individuals who use those spaces on an everyday basis. Focusing on the Geelong to Melbourne V/Line train service, PotF mimics and grows from the spaces it occupies.

The transient nature of travel distorts our perception of what we are travelling through. In a similar way, the passive experiences of daily patterns are distorted by the perceptual set of routine. In this way, PotF challenges the notion of Auge’s non-places and explores its position in the contemporary world. By creating soft, touchable and potentially wearable textile installations, PotF returns the focus to the commuter’s experience of so-called non-places and patterns they create. Intermediate places of transit hold a strong sense of place and importance in people’s everyday lives. PotF aims to prevent these places from becoming only part of the furniture.
